Barcodes are the fastest way to finish a sale and avoid price mistakes — the cashier never searches for items or types prices. This guide explains how to choose a barcode scanner, print barcode labels for items without one, and use scale barcodes — with current prices.
1. 1D or 2D scanner?
- 1D (linear): reads standard barcodes on packaged products — enough for most stores.
- 2D: also reads QR codes and phone screens, and handles crumpled or faded barcodes better.
2. Wired or wireless?
- Wired USB: cheaper and always ready — ideal for a fixed counter.
- Wireless: for heavy or bulky items and stocktakes between shelves.

4. Barcode labels for items without a barcode
Many products — imported in bulk, packed in-store, clothing or accessories — have no barcode. Give each item a code in the software, print a barcode label on thermal labels and stick it on the item or shelf. From then on it scans like any product.
- Create the item with a unique code.
- Print as many labels as you need.
- Stick the label in a consistent, visible spot.
- Test the scan at the till before shelving.
5. Scale barcodes
For produce, meat and cheese, a scale prints a label with weight or price; the cashier scans it and the price is calculated automatically.

6. Common problems
- Scans but no item appears: the barcode is not assigned to the item.
- Wrong digits: the keyboard layout — keep it English while scanning.
- Label will not scan: print larger or replace crumpled labels.
